Connecting Field Reporters via Alternative Networks
Modern network technologies offer new ways of linking field reporters, field teams, and Outside Broadcast (OB) vehicles to broadcasting studios. Freelance journalists, for example, can transfer their work from home via DSL. And thanks to UMTS and WLAN hot spots, video journalists can quickly submit their pieces from anywhere. IP transmission via satellite also facilitates alternatives to file-based input. And the true potential of WiMAX – yet another technology which will soon take flight – is simply waiting to be discovered.
IRT has conducted initial field tests for alternative means of allowing field reporters and OB vehicles to communicate: DSL-DSL performance tests, access via WLAN hot spots, and IP links by means of satellite for OB vehicles. Further tests will focus, for example, on the security of connecting by means of these networks and other (telecommunications) networks.
IRT advises and assists organisations with the use of telecommunications networks which provide connections for field teams. Our services encompass joint pilot installations and field tests, concrete project planning/implementation, and the evaluation of scheduled/existing use scenarios.
