Media and Network Convergence

IRT explores possibilities of using different networks in a convergent manner to transmit video/audio.

The principal aim is the realisation of IP-based services via various network technologies.

INSTINCT Project

INSTINCT (IP-based Networks, Services and TermINals for Converging SysTems) aims to create convergent services for mobile users by blending broadcast networks and wireless communications. This would result in added value for everyone involved: end users, broadcasters, and wireless providers. There is a particular emphasis on the terrestrial DVB standards DVB-T and DVB-H as well as MHP in conjunction with GPRS and UMTS.

During the first project phase, which ended in late 2005, IRT played a number of crucial roles:

  • Leader of Work Package 1: dissemination and training
  • Theoretical and practical studies on DVB-H in the context of DVB-T: measurements, performance, etc.; studies on the coexistence of DVB-T/H and 3G
  • Development of a mechanism for transmitting MHP services via IP-based networks
  • Incorporating INSTINCT developments into IRT’s test platform; conducting field tests within the DVB-T network in Munich
