Transmitter Monitoring and Management with SNMP
IRT provides the following services in the field of transmitter monitoring and management via SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol):
- Examining the use of SNMP in broadcast networks, particularly for the monitoring and controlling of DVB-T/DAB transmitters
- Incorporation of broadcast components into a general network-management system
- Defining and standardising a manufacturer-independent and “public” MIB (Management Information Base) for monitoring terrestrial transmitters (based on technical guidelines for DVB-T & DAB). This occurs within a programme-distribution workgroup in cooperation with T-Systems and industry participants.
ENTHRONE Project
ENTHRONE (End-to-End Quality of Service through Integrated Management of Content, Networks and Terminals) is an integrated project in the thematic priority “Information Society Technologies” of EU Framework Programme 6. The ENTHRONE project focuses on end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) over heterogeneous networks and terminals. ENTHRONE seeks to develop an integrated management solution (IMS: Integrated Management Supervisor) which covers an entire audiovisual distribution chain, including content generation, distribution across heterogeneous networks, and reception at user terminals. The MPEG-21 approach is being used as a data model.
During ENTHRONE’s first project phase, which was completed in March 2006, IRT focused on specifying requirements for the ENTHRONE system that reflect the needs of public broadcasters. Our institute furthermore set up an ENTHRONE test bed in Munich, which facilitated the following subprojects for broadcasting services:
- DVB-T playing-out for “normal” TV reception and interactive services
- QoS for the feeding of the DVB signal to the DVB-T transmitters (IMS monitors and manages the networks)
- Transmission of an interactive MHP application created by RBB (a scientific journal), including realisation
- Integrating a standard SNMP-MIB to monitor DVB-T/DAB transmitters
IRT is also making significant contributions during ENTHRONE’s current project phase.
