HDTV and Replay Quality

Optimising the Picture Quality of Standard Definition Television (SDTV)

More and more large, flatscreen TVs are on the shelves of consumer-electronics shops. Gaps in quality, however, remain between the capabilities of recording media such as DVD and HDV and the broadcast signals which are actually transmitted. This is especially the case when the attention paid to quality varies during the production, editing, distribution and transmission phases. By optimising the existing SD sequence (production – editing – distribution - transmission), IRT hopes that consumers will soon enjoy proper picture quality on their flatscreens.

Excellent TV Picture Quality

The use of HD equipment during production makes it possible to utilise in numerous ways the programme material which has been created. In turn, HDTV material can be immediately down-converted and adapted for SD transmission. The edit list which has thus been created and the HDTV material can be stored in the archive for easy access in future.

With very few exceptions, HD quality is the norm for programme rights and productions in today’s global market. As a result, content providers must produce content in HD if it is to be of use worldwide. In addition, the increasing popularity of HDTV-ready equipment in German homes will boost demand for programme sources which meet cutting-edge technical demands.
