HDTV and Multichannel Audio

In high-quality HDTV productions, the flawless realisation of not only video but also audio is of the highest importance.

In cooperation with BR, ORF, ZDF, and the Film & Television Academy (HFF) in Brandenburg, Germany, IRT has produced a number of impressive HDTV demo sequences. The multichannel audio was produced in 5.0 or 5.1 (uncompressed mode; PCM 24-bit, 48 kHz), or in Dolby E, the professional distribution format. The corresponding video material was recorded compression-free in the formats 720p50 and 1080i25 on a special video server.

At the IFA 2005 in Berlin, IRT showed the HDTV demo sequences to a large audience for the first time. The films were screened in a customised HDTV room, which IRT had equipped to satisfy the highest demands for video and audio fidelity.

The demo sequences included an opera production of Donizetti’s “Roberto Devereux” at Munich’s Nationaltheater (BR, Unitel, IRT), the opening ceremony and the inaugural football match at Munich’s Allianz Arena (ZDF, IRT), the ice-hockey quarterfinal between the Czech Republic and the United States at the 2005 IIHF World Championship in Vienna (ORF, IRT), and “Scraper,” an example film shot digitally in HDTV quality by the HFF in Brandenburg.

The screenings held at the IFA’s Forum for Science and Technology (TWF) were very well received by audiences.

In addition, IRT provided assistance for the HDTV productions of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, and realised several co-productions with the HFF in Potsdam.
