MXF
File Format for TV Production
Maximum interoperability among different software components in IT-based television production is possible only with the help of a uniform and standardised file format. Standardised in 2003, the Material eXchange Format (MXF) has established itself as the principal file format for exchanging audiovisual material and metadata in non-tape-based production and archive structures.
IRT gave particular consideration to the EBU’s concerns regarding MXF, and continues to play an active role in standardising this format. Our specialists developed the MXF Software Development Kit (SDK) in close cooperation with MOG Solutions. In the framework of the MXF Test Center and with the SDK as a basis, tools were created for the generation and analysis of MXF files (MXF Generator and MXF Analyser). The MXF Analyser is available in the “professional” version as DLL and can easily be integrated into IT-based production structures.
Furthermore, IRT offers manufacturers and users a range of tests for MXF files, encoders, decoders, and products. These tests verify whether MXF implementations conform to standards, thus helping to ensure interoperability between different products. Last but not least, IRT continues to advise broadcasters on the incorporation of MXF into IT-based TV production as well as into programme exchange and archiving.
