Digital Audio Broadcasting - DAB
Since the mid-1980’s, IRT has played a decisive role in developing the digital standard DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting). And our institute has made significant contributions to audio coding and transmitter-network design. In fact, IRT won a renowned Emmy award in recognition of its work on the worldwide MPEG audio standard.
Furthermore, IRT examines the real-world utilisation of industrial DAB components and develops its own systems and services for DAB. And as a member of the World DMB Forum, IRT belongs to an international research network which is working to standardise broadcast technology worldwide. Thanks to our decades of experience and awareness of current developments, IRT assists broadcasters and terminal-device manufacturers throughout Europe with the processing and implementation of programme-associated services.
Further information on programme-associated services
TripleMUX: DAB Data Inserter
The data inserter TripleMUX enables programme-associated radio services and dedicated broadcast services to be fed into the transmission channels FIC (Fast Information Channel), PAD (Programme-Associated Data) and NPAD (Non-Programme-Associated Data). TripleMUX constitutes an important tool for IRT in the development of new services. TripleMUX also allows associates and customers to transmit all key services during daily operations.
IRT Test Transmitter
IRT operates a DAB multiplex in VHF Band III in Munich for experimental purposes. The ensemble is broadcast on Channel 12A via two transmitter sites in a single frequency network. In conjunction with the DAB Playout Studio, the DAB multiplex provides a test platform for the standardisation and functional testing of services and receivers.
DAB-Scout Server
The DAB Scout Server was created at IRT as a monitoring platform for services in DAB and DMB. And the available data decoders for EPG, TMC and TPEG can also be integrated into the DAB Scout Server.
Enhanced Packet Mode
Large amounts of data can be transferred only very slowly in a transmission channel which is plagued by errors. Enhanced error control is thus indispensable for the proper transmission of video or audio files. In cooperation with the World DMB Forum, IRT is developing Enhanced Packet Mode for DAB to ensure fast transfer rates.
