01/31/2008 — IRT launched Mobile WiMAX
Since December 2007 IRT operates at its location in Munich the first optically adapted Mobile WiMAX network in Germany. The pilot installation transmits the data from antennas which are located in a height of approx. 100 meter on top of the television tower of the Bavarian Broadcasting Cooperation. Two antennas are directed in a manner which enables a signal bundling for the reception even in mobile environment.
The focus of the trial is to evaluate the WiMAX mobile broadband technology for broadcast services, e.g. audio, video and data transmission using the IP protocol for mobile, portable and fixed use. In addition Electronic News Gathering (ENG) is important. Broadcasters are expecting from ENG technology more efficiency in contributing items by editors in the field.
The pilot installation of the WiMAX standard IEEE 802.16e-2005 operates with two frequencies in the 2,5 and 2,6 GHz band according to a test license agreement with the Federal Network Agency. The bandwidth is variable adjustable to 5 MHz, 8,75 MHz or 10 MHz. In course of the tests IRT intend to reach transfer rates up to 6 Mbps. During the project several types of receivers will be tested. In order to select the measurement points in the field IRT will use its own frequency planning tool “FRANSY“.
