High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)

HEVC offers broadcasters and network providers a new, highly-efficient video encoding standard for applications ranging from SDTV to UHDTV. At the IRT, the experts evaluate the performance capacity of the standards.

MPEG-2, H.264 and now H.265, also called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) – each new generation has cut the bandwidth requirement almost in half, reducing the required data rate for transmitting the identical video quality to almost one quarter in the past 20 years.

The applications of HEVC range from SDTV to ultra-HD (with 10 bit resolution) and is used for the new standard for digital terrestrial television DVB-T2 HD, ultra-HD and Internet streaming. The IRT assists with application scenarios, broadcast studies and interoperability tests with device manufacturers.
