GeTVivid

“GeTVivid – Let’s do things together” aims at supporting older adults with mild impairments (e.g., restricted mobility, hearing or vision impairments) to manage their daily activities in their (residential) home and aims at improving the quality of life, autonomy and participation in social life.

Equipping an older adult’s home with different technologies is not the solution to create a perfect home environment but already available technologies hold the ability to make a useful contribution. The TV as an integral part of peoples’ everyday life can be found in many homes and is therefore one of the most widespread and familiar devices that influences people lives. While in former days the TV has been mainly used to retrieve news and as a medium for entertainment, Internet access has promoted the development of interactive TV.

The goal of the project is to offer a useful and valuable set of AAL-related functionality and services to older adults as well as informal and formal carers through the use of connected TV devices based on the HbbTV standard (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television). HbbTV application(s) running on a television set can be complemented with an extended user interface on a mobile second screen (i.e. tablet or mobile phone with touch screen).

The initially proposed services will be:

  • a help exchange system that enables older adults to offer/ask for support for daily life activities to/from other older adults, who are living in geographical closeness; in case the informal care within a local entity (e.g., a residential building or home or a neighborhood) does not provide the help needed, the network can be extended incrementally from the direct surrounding to relatives (informal carers) and then to formal carers; this also includes a support of social integration and connecting generations for informal care by providing the possibility to display short messages;

  • an access to service providers like meals on wheels, shopping assistance, house-keeping, taxi, medical help or assistance, etc.

  • support functions like reminders (e.g., for medication intake), news, weather, etc. By applying user-centered design the (future) users and their activities, goals and characteristics are in the center of the development process, i.e. the specification of potential services will be explored within this project together with older adults.
    As HbbTV is a rather new technology to many users and application developers, it will be crucial to get to know the affordances of the digital material (HbbTV) by exploring the properties (e.g. the combination with a second mobile screen).
